My First Birthday Outside the Philippines: Celebrating at Covadonga Lakes, Asturias
July 12, 2025 — a birthday unlike any before. For the first time, I celebrated my birthday outside the Philippines, far away from family, friends, and familiar traditions. This milestone took place in the breathtaking natural beauty of Covadonga Lakes in Asturias, Spain — a perfect blend of tranquility, reflection, and adventure.

What Made This Birthday Different?
This was my first birthday far from home, away from the usual Filipino birthday traditions and the warm embrace of family. Instead of a loud celebration, the day was quiet but meaningful. I missed my family dearly, but being surrounded by nature helped ease the longing and brought clarity.
This experience taught me that birthdays aren’t about the number of years or grand festivities, but about cherishing the moment and being with the people who matter most.
A Quiet Birthday with My Wife at Covadonga Lakes
Unlike past birthdays filled with family gatherings, food, and gifts, this year it was just me and my wife, surrounded by the peacefulness of Picos de Europa National Park. No cakes, no singing of “Happy Birthday,” only the sounds of nature and our shared presence.
We spent the day hiking and soaking in the stunning views of lakes, mountains, and clouds — a birthday celebration that felt intimate and deeply personal.
Life as a Digital Nomad: Reflections and Lessons
Since moving to Spain in March 2025, my wife and I have been adjusting to a new culture, lifestyle, and environment. Celebrating this milestone abroad reinforced my commitment to the digital nomad life. It’s about growth, exploration, and finding value in new experiences.
Final Thoughts: More Than Just a Birthday
My first birthday outside the Philippines was a transformative experience. It deepened my appreciation for life’s moments, big and small, and strengthened my resolve to embrace this new chapter.
For anyone celebrating a milestone abroad, remember: it’s not where you are but how you live the moment that truly counts.

Because that's where you'll find the things more important than what you want."
